The craft behind the cloth

Hand block printing, in the tradition of Sanganer and Bagru.

What hand block printing is

Hand block printing is one of Rajasthan’s oldest living crafts. A design is carved by hand into a wooden block. The block is dipped and pressed onto the cloth by hand, one impression at a time, and repeated across the full length of the fabric. A single piece can take many hundreds of impressions, and every colour in a design needs its own carved block and its own pass across the cloth.

Sanganer and Bagru

Two towns near Jaipur gave this craft its character. Sanganer is known for fine, delicate printing, often floral, traditionally on a pale ground. Bagru is known for an earthier palette and for dabu, a resist method where a paste of mud and lime is applied by hand before dyeing so the covered cloth stays clear of colour. We work in this tradition, and we hold ourselves to the standard it sets.

The mark of the hand

Because the work is done by hand, no two pieces are identical. A slight shift in a motif, a soft edge where one impression meets the next, a gentle movement of colour. These are not faults. They are the signature of a handmade cloth, and we set that expectation clearly with every buyer.

Working directly with artisans

We work with the artisans who do this printing directly. That keeps the craft close, the quality in our hands, and the story honest. As we grow, our aim is to deepen these relationships and bring more of the process under our own roof.
